On the sixth day of Author Goodies…business advice and links.

Every author is a business owner. Whether you like it or not, if you’re a writer, you are creating a product for sale, which makes you an entrepreneur. Here’s some links to some great blogs and vlogs about the business of writing, and keeping your most important asset (you!) inspired to create.

Legal Issues

Kiffanie Stahle (The Artist’s JD) is a lawyer, a photographer and a small business owner. Her blog posts talk about legal issues facing creative business owners.

Publishing

Joel Friedlander at thebookdesigner.com shares a list of 52 blogs for self-publishing authors.

Business Issues

Writer Beware® is a blog that looks at the business issues of writing, like contracts and copyright issues. It’s sponsored by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, with additional support from Mystery Writers of America, Horror Writers Association, and American Society of Journalists and Authors.

Creative Inspiration

When I get stuck, I look for inspiration from other creative avenues. CreativeSomething.net is your (almost) daily dose of creative inspiration and encouragement.

Personal/Business Inspiration

Because you are your brand, it’s important that you keep yourself engaged and inspired. Danielle Laporte’s TruthBombs are a daily favorite of mine.

Marie Forleo is another inspiration for me. Her weekly vlog, MarieTV, is energizing.

On the fifth day of Author Goodies, here’s some of my favorite social media and web tools.

Postscript August 12, 2015: It’s Christmas in July…ok, was. Got a lovely note last month from Chris Makara from Bulk.ly with this wonderful blog post of over 100 experts sharing their favorite social media tools. There’s even a filter at the top that you use to find apps and tools for specific tasks. Thank you Chris!

Website/Blog

WordPress is my go-to for website builds and blogs. There are lots of free WordPress themes to choose from or you can buy one. If you don’t have a host, WordPress can host your blog as well.

Email Marketing

Mailchimp is the enewsletter service that I’m using. They can manage multiple email lists and campaigns for you, including unsubscribe actions that meet US and Canadian anti-spam laws. Mailchimp has a free account for up to 2,000 subscribers and up to 12,000 emails a month.

Social Media Management

Tweetdeck is a twitter management tool, free from Twitter.

If you need to manage and coordinate your social media activities (who doesn’t?) then check out a free account with HootSuite, which lets you manage up to 3 of your profiles from social media sites like Facebook, twitter, google+ and LinkedIn.

There are lots of great social media management tools out there. Once you are feeling comfortable using the platforms and are ready to dive deeper to understanding the engagements with your audience, here’s a list of some pretty powerful insight tools.

Analytics

Google Analytics is one of the best-known analytics tool out there and can track a lot more than hits on your blog. The learning curve is a little steep though, so make sure you check out their extensive help.

If you are looking to measure your social media in one place, and Google analytics is a little too much for you, here’s a list of free apps from Tech Republic.

Tsu

Tsu (pronounced Sue) is a new social media network, similar to Facebook. Some authors are giving it a try. Check it out.

On the fourth day of Author Goodies, get some open source software.

All the software listed in this post is open source, meaning that the download is free. It also means that a community of developers and users both update the software and provide support. Open Source software is great if you are on a budget, but be prepared for longish wait times for upgraded versions, and less than ideal documentation. If you decide that you want to go the open-source route and you’re not tech savvy, I highly recommend a techie friend that you can occasionally call on for help (techie friends love bribes of beer or homemade treats).

Word Processing/Office Suite

Did you know there was an open source office productivity suite, similar to Microsoft Office? Check out Open Office from Apache.

Image Editing

GIMP is the open-source answer to Photoshop. If you are familiar with Photoshop, and looking for a more Photoshop-likle version of GIMP, check out Gimpshop.

Page Layout

There’s an open source equivalent of InDesign, too. It’s called Scribus.

Looking for something else?

Maybe you are looking for a video editor or a vector art program. Osalt is an open source software directory. It features commercial versions (labelled in red) and open source software (labelled in green) for your comparison pleasure.

On the second day of author goodies, learn to market your book better.

There are a lot of great book marketers and PR practitioners out there, but in my opinion, Anne Chaconas at Badass Marketing is one of the best. She delivers great marketing and PR advice for authors every week, straight from the hip with the occasional f-bomb. Sign up for her weekly dose of no-bullshit advice.

For general social media marketing insight, check out Nova Scotian marketing wunderkind Ross Simmonds. This guy’s brilliant.
